Now ‘ere’ the years
have come and gone—
Should I have said:
“He is the man I should have been?”
Before my toil
undone…?
With more than a
half-century yet to go!
Should I have done
such a thing?
The man I might have
been, would come to haunt me,
with his candid grin.
Faith and vision, and
no betraying sight: to follow the
dream:
In desecrated years,
relentlessly: maimed and sorry twain!
But well I know, the
man I might have been,
Would have been: of rough
and ready tears.
