Gog and Magog

(Two Trees of Glastonbury, England) 2002

Gog and Magog, 2002

I saw them near the Tor, in Glastonbury,
Gog and Magog, the two giant legendary trees
From the days of King Author and the Green Knight
Of King Richard the Lion Heart, and wizardry.
Two twin trees, like twisted ghosts, the hosts
Of the Glastonbury Abbey, on a path and hillside.
There they stood, naked, with little bark—
Stricken by age, weather and the times.
Formed like dead twisted beasts, right out of
Camelot’s legacy…, Oh, I did stand and look awhile,
Then climbed the fence, and up the tree a foot or three.
I thought, ‘what have you seen’, — surely more than me!
